DCLS Life Skills program delivers a night school-based education that helps participants build practical new skills and raise their knowledge of important topics. Night school classes are held twice a week at two DCLS sites; at Ladner Connections and Scott Road Connections.

DCLS employs two dedicated instructors, who skillfully blend academics and life skills education into their curriculum. All classroom activities are taught in a variety of ways to ensure concepts are understood by students. There is role modeling, game playing, textbook work and conversation around each of the components that are reviewed at each class.

Many of the lessons work directly with participants to work toward greater independence in the community. In the lesson on money and budgeting, participant Christine B. worked through practicing a real-life transaction, and practiced making change from a transaction. The group will also practice their skills outside the classroom; this particular lesson moved from the classroom to Tim Hortons so that the class could further practice their transactional skills.
