SCACL Respite program serves families that require a break from the daily responsibility of caring for a family member with a disability. SCACL coordinates respite care for adult (CLBC) and children (MCFD). Respite is an important part of caregiver preservation and offers a support service for families. It serves as a vital part of the continuum of family support and is intended to reduce family stress and increase family stability.

Respite caregivers offer support to families in caring for their loved ones. Families are involved in selecting their caregiver and in arranging the times that are most suitable, whether it be a couple of hours, a weekend or an extended vacation. They also decide whether respite will be based out of the caregivers home or their own home with community activities as a general focus. Respite caregivers undergo a screening process held by the SCACL Respite Coordinator that includes a Criminal Record Clearance. Caregivers are then matched with families according to individual needs and preferences.

Adult Respite
Respite is provided to adults with developmental disabilities by screened caregivers who are selected by the family or matched by the program. Hours are set and arranged mutually and can be based in community or in the caregiver's home.

Children's Respite
Respite is provided to children and youth by screened caregivers who are selected by the family and/or matched by the program. Hours are arranged mutually and respite support is typically in the caregiver's home, or in the community.

Emergency & Contracted Respite
SCACL has an emergency respite bed and screened caregivers available to families in need of short-term or emergency respite support
