Disability Alliance BC
Since 1977, Disability Alliance BC has been a provincial, cross-disability voice in British Columbia. Our mission is to support people, with all disabilities, to live with dignity, independence and as equal and full participants in the community. We champion issues impacting the lives of people with disabilities through our direct services, community partnerships, advocacy, research and publications.
Disability Alliance BC offers the following services:
· Provincial disability assistance: Advocates can assist people to apply for the BC provincial disability benefits, as well as assist with reconsiderations/appeals in the event of a denied application or associated benefits. Provincial disability benefits refer to either the Persons with Disabilities benefit (PWD) or the Persons with Persistent Multiple Barriers benefit (PPMB). We request that all people reaching out to us for help with either of these applications have already applied for income assistance.
· CPP-D: Advocates can assist people to apply for federal disability benefits through Canada Pension Plan-Disability as well as assist with reconsiderations/appeals in the event of a denied application.
· RDSP: Advocates can assist people in setting up a Registered Disability Savings Plan account as well as apply for the Disability Tax Credit. Please try out our online tool to see if you may be eligible for the DTC: https://disabilityalliancebc.org/dtc-app/
· TaxAid: Advocates can assist people who are receiving the PWD benefit or the Persons with Persistent and Multiple Barriers (PPMB) benefit with simple income tax filings and information/referrals.
· Disability Law Clinic: DABC has a staff lawyer who can provide free legal advice to people with disabilities for the following situations:
• discrimination based on disability/ failure to accommodate a disability
• questions related to being denied private disability benefits by your employer (such as Long Term Disability)
• questions from people whose financial affairs are managed by the Public Guardian and Trustee of BC
· The Right Fit Program: We match affordable, accessible homes and independent living supports with people who need wheelchair-accessible housing.
