Residential Program
L'Arche Greater Vancouver has six homes for adults with developmental disabilities where the "mutuality of relationships" comes to life every day. People in the homes prepare and share meals, plan outings, do dishes, go for walks and pray together. One of their highlights is to go on vacation together every summer.
Each of our six homes has its own name and story. Creation House and Peniel House are located in our main building. The three other homes - Nazirah, Emily and The Crossing - are a short drive or walking distance from the main building. The sixth home - Unity House - is currently vacant, awaiting the planned redevelopment of L'Arche's main property.
L'Arche homes are places of welcome where families and friends come for dinner, birthday parties and other celebrations. On weekends, there are activities such as bowling, movies and concerts.
We also provide respite care for adults with developmental disabilities within our existing homes. All of our homes are fully licensed by the Fraser Health Authority and maintain high standards of care.
They offer six houses:
Since 1999, Creation House has been a home to support people in our community who are aging. A fully accessible home, it accommodates up to five people with disabilities. Living in a quieter and slower rhythm of life, people are supported by a team of assistants from different cultural and vocational backgrounds.
Emily House opened in August 1996 welcoming five people. A board member helped purchase the house and it was named in honour of her niece, Emily, who has Down Syndrome. Emily came to the opening ceremony to cut the ribbon with one of the residents. Five people with disabilities live in Emily House, along with four live-in assistants and additional support from part-time assistants.
Nazirah House took its name from Nazareth, the childhood home of Jesus. This home, which is located near Burnaby's Metrotown Mall, accommodates up to four people with disabilities and four assistants. They often have guests around the table and serve meals that are seasoned with laughter.
Peniel House is a small apartment-like suite located on the ground level of our main building, facing a courtyard that turns into a beautiful garden of flowers in spring and summer. In this accessible home, one person with disabilities and an assistant live together. A couple of other assistants and friends also take part in the day-to-day life of Peniel House.
The Crossing House opened in March 1988 to welcome four people from Woodlands School. Today, it is home for five people with disabilities and five assistants living and keeping a vibrant household. The residents of The Crossing enjoy one of the best views of the North Shore mountains from their kitchen.
